Independent practice for NSDA-style events

Extemporaneous Speaking practice

You have the evidence. Does it answer the question?

Extemp practice should test more than what you know about the news. It should show whether your answer, evidence and analysis fit together. Event Prep gives middle- and high-school speakers a repeatable way to rehearse between club meetings: draw, prepare, record, choose one fix, repeat.

The evidence-to-analysis drill

Should cities expand public transit before widening roads?

An original Augmind exercise, not an official NSDA prompt or a free AI assessment.

  1. Take five minutes to choose a position and find one relevant, reliable source. Write down its publisher, date and what it actually establishes. This is a short practice drill, not a tournament prep period.
  2. Speak for 90 seconds: answer the question, explain one reason, identify the source, then explain why that evidence supports your answer. Do not add a second statistic to avoid doing the analysis.
  3. Listen back. Underline your answer and the sentence connecting the evidence to it. Record that connection again if a listener would have to infer it.

Listen for: Could someone disagree with your answer but still follow how you reached it? If the source only describes the problem, you still need to explain why your proposed response addresses it.

What useful feedback can look like

Constructed teaching example, written by Augmind. Not a student recording, testimonial or generated product report.

Example excerpt

“Traffic is getting worse. A city report says commutes take longer. That is why we need more buses.”

A three-rep plan between club meetings

A suggested routine, not an improvement guarantee. Leave time to listen and revise.

Rep 1 · Make the answer explicit

Draw a question in the division your league runs (USX, IX or mixed) and state your answer early. Use your own checked sources during preparation.

Rep 2 · Repair one weak connection

Use the report's quoted evidence to locate a vague claim or unsupported jump. Rehearse the explanation, then test it in another full run.

Rep 3 · Check transfer

Draw a different question. See whether your answer-first structure survives a new topic; take the remaining research or delivery questions to your club coach.

What Event Prep supports

Answer a current-affairs question after limited preparation. USX focuses on the United States; IX focuses on international issues. Middle schools run Mixed Extemp; that is what the Season Pass covers.

  • Mixed Extemp on NSDA middle-school rules
  • A question bank, a preparation clock and recorded speech reps
  • Feedback on your spoken argument, measured delivery and timing
  • A per-event practice history and a redo of just the fix after each rep

Ready for a regular practice loop?

One Season Pass. More purposeful reps.

For a student who already knows their event and can practice independently. Your school club remains the place for live audiences, teammates and your coach's judgment.

  • For middle schoolers (grades 5–8): up to 4 AI-scored reps a day across middle-school speech events, plus a redo of just the fix after each one.
  • Software feedback only: no live class and no human review. Your school coach stays your coach.
  • A saved practice plan, event history and a private summary for the parent email on the pass.

Questions about Extemporaneous Speaking practice

How can I practice Extemp alone?

Draw a question, research a defensible answer, record one timed speech, and listen for the connection between each source and your reasoning. Start with the free short drill above. The middle-school Season Pass adds recording, event-specific AI feedback, practice history and a redo of just the fix.

Is this for USX, IX or middle-school Extemp?

The free drill works for any division. The Season Pass is for middle school right now and runs NSDA Mixed Extemp; high-school USX and IX practice isn't on sale yet. Your own tournament's rules remain the authority.

Does the AI fact-check my sources?

Do not use it as a fact-checker. It can comment on how evidence functions in your speech, but you must verify quotations, dates, statistics and source accuracy yourself.
