Independent practice for NSDA-style events

Original Oratory practice

You know every word. Is the argument landing?

Memorizing an Original Oratory speech and improving it are different jobs. Once the words feel familiar, it gets harder to hear where an audience loses the point. Event Prep helps middle- and high-school speakers rehearse their own writing, inspect feedback and make a deliberate next revision.

The one-sentence thesis test

In one sentence: what should the audience think differently after your speech?

An original Augmind exercise, not an official NSDA prompt or a free AI assessment.

  1. Without looking at your script, say your central claim in one sentence. A topic such as ‘social media’ is not yet a claim. Do not write a new speech for this exercise.
  2. Record your opening and the transition into your first point. Stop after about 90 seconds. Ask a listener to repeat what they think your claim is, or listen back after a break.
  3. If their version differs from yours, revise the transition. Make the claim audible before adding more stories, quotations or rhetorical questions.

Listen for: Does the opening lead to this particular argument, or could the same opening be attached to almost any speech about your topic?

What useful feedback can look like

Constructed teaching example, written by Augmind. Not a student recording, testimonial or generated product report.

Example excerpt

“We all want to belong. We all use social media. Today I want to talk about how society has changed.”

A three-rep plan between club meetings

A suggested routine, not an improvement guarantee. Leave time to listen and revise.

Rep 1 · Establish a baseline

Save your own script and record the full speech. Note the part that feels least clear, not just the part where you stumble.

Rep 2 · Revise with a reason

Choose one issue from the report, such as a late thesis or unsupported claim. Save the revised script so its version is marked in your practice history.

Rep 3 · Test the revision aloud

Run the piece again. Compare the relevant feedback and your recording, not just the overall score. Take a question you cannot resolve yourself to your school coach.

What Event Prep supports

Develop and deliver your own prepared speech. For this practice page, the focus is a clear central idea, meaningful support and an ending that earns its conclusion.

  • A place to save your own script and its revisions
  • Full-piece recording, timing and script-coverage feedback
  • A per-event score history that marks script changes
  • Redo just the fix on the same piece and see what changed

Ready for a regular practice loop?

One Season Pass. More purposeful reps.

For a student who already knows their event and can practice independently. Your school club remains the place for live audiences, teammates and your coach's judgment.

  • For middle schoolers (grades 5–8): up to 4 AI-scored reps a day across middle-school speech events, plus a redo of just the fix after each one.
  • Software feedback only: no live class and no human review. Your school coach stays your coach.
  • A saved practice plan, event history and a private summary for the parent email on the pass.

Questions about Original Oratory practice

Will Event Prep write my Original Oratory speech?

No. Bring your own writing. The practice workflow is built around rehearsing, reviewing feedback and revising your own piece, not supplying a competition speech to submit as yours.

Can I compare different script versions?

You can save script revisions and see where changes occurred in your practice history. Recorded reps retain their script-version context. Use that record to compare how a specific revision sounded, rather than treating every score change as proof of improvement.

Is an AI score the same as an NSDA judge's ballot?

No. These speech reports use Augmind's event-specific practice rubric. They are not official NSDA ballots and do not predict a tournament placement. A human coach or judge may hear something different.
